The Curiosity Behind the Compilation

Charles E. Roy Jr.’s book began with questions. As he read books and articles and watched documentaries about military history and weapon systems, he wondered whether their lists had missed important examples, and whether he could put together his own.

Born in Vermont in 1958, Roy graduated from the University of Vermont in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a minor in history. Through ROTC, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served for 28 years on active duty in the Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2008.

Roy also spent more than 20 years in retail management, retiring in 2018. He and his wife, Joy, reside in South Texas.

Joy encouraged him to turn his notes into a book and helped refine his writing. The resulting compilation reflects his interest in military history and his willingness to invite discussion about its most influential subjects.
